Braised Tofu
From Gem's Vegetarian Cooking
Adapted from VICKY9999's Baked Tofu recipe - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Baked-Tofu-Bites/Detail.aspx
- 1 tbs oil - Sesame or Peanut is good mixed with Canola to get a higher smoke point
- 1 lb Extra Firm Tofu (I prefer WhiteWave/WestSoy as it's denser than other brands and doesn't require pressing first)
- 1/4 cup low-sodium Soy Sauce (normal is fine)
- 2 tbs Maple Syrup
- 2 tbs Ketchup
- 1 tbs Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/4 tsp Hot Sauce
- 1 tbs Black Sesame Seeds (white is fine, I just like how black looks)
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground Black Pepper
Cut the tofu into triangles. Mix together the remaining ingredients. Heat oil in frying pan and fry tofu for approximately 4 minutes on each side until nicely browned. Add the liquid mixture to the pan and cook until heated through and the liquid is your desired consistency.
