Braided Apple Bread

Dough:

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tbs oil
  • 2 tbs cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour, may add 1/2 cup white whole wheat if desired

Apple Filling:

  • 4 medium apples (I like 2 Granny Smith and 2 Gala)
  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tbs water
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (unpacked)
  • 2 tbs flour
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

Combine all dough ingredients, start with 1 cup of flour. Knead on high for 5 minutes. Let rest. Add rest of flour as needed, until bowl kneads clean. Place in oiled bowl and let rise - about an hour.

In a 2 quart pan combine apples, lemon juice and water. Bring to boil over medium heat; cover and simmer until apples are just tender (about 8 minutes). Stir into apple mixture brown sugar, 2 tbs flour, butter, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook until thickened. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Roll dough out into a 10 x 15-inch rectangle. Spread apple filling in middle third of dough. With a sharp knife, cut diagonal strips in each of the 2 outer sections of the dough (about 1 inch apart), cutting in almost to the filling. Fold strips over filling, alternating one from the right side, one from the left and so on, overlapping strips in the center.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until golden brown.
